Ethel Guthrie Remley, 101, Eagle Grove, a former Webster City resident, died Saturday, Oct. 15, at the Rotary Ann House in Eagle Grove. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19 at the First Baptist Church, Webster City, with the Rev. Donald S. Ripley officiating. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery. Friends may call at the Foster Funeral Home from 4 p.m. today until 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Ethel Guthrie, daughter of Samuel Carlson and Estella Wood Guthrie, was born November 4, 1886 in Meriden. She came to Webster City with her parents.

She received her early education in the Webster City Public Schools, graduating in 1904. After teaching country schools in Hamilton and Marshall Counties for four years, she attended Drake University in Des Moines, specializing in Home Economics, finishing in 1913. For the next two years, she taught at the Earlham Academy in Earlham, then came to Webster City, where she taught home economics in the local schools for three years.

She then joined the staff of Iowa State College, being one of the first to work in the Extension Department as a home demonstration agent in Palo Alto and Muscatine counties. She organized many township womens and girls 4-H clubs through the Women's Farm Burea.

She married Robert G. Remley on April 4, 1922 in Marshalltown. The couple always resided in Webster City, where Mr. Remley had practiced law since 1912. He preceded Mrs. Remley in death in March 1986.

She is survived by one daughter, Joan (Mrs. Harvey) Weeks, Long Beach, Washington, two granddaughters, Jane (Mrs. Abe) Spangler, Eagle Grove; Deborah Tessman, San Diego, California, four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Mrs. Eva Groves, Eagle Grove, and Oral Guthrie, Marshalltown; and a brother, Howard S. Guthrie, Marshalltown.

Mrs. Remley was a member of the First Baptist Church, Sharon Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, Past Matrons Club, Webster City Garden Club and Chapter EL, PEO.
