John George Ely, 90, Webster City, died Friday morning, April 11, 2003 at Southfield Wellness Community. John's body was cremated. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Vernon Lutheran Church near Dows, the Rev. Doug Tiffany will officiate. Burial of ashes will be in the Vernon Lutheran Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Carson Funeral Home in Dayton is in charge of arrangements.

John George Ely was born on April 17, 1912, the son of Roy and Minnie Wolber Ely on a farm in Boone County, Iowa. He attended rural schools in Boone County. Along with being a successful farmer, he also sold Oliver tractors, seed corn and did some custom farming. John was united in marriage to Martella Tingwald on Nov. 10, 1935 in Grimes, Iowa. The couple resided in Beaver and in 1937, moved to a farm south of Ogden. In 1952, they moved to a farm northeast of Blairsburg. Martella passed away on Sept. 17, 1998. John moved to Webster City in 1999.

He is survived by his daughter, Ila Marie Luhmann of Webster City; sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Lynn Ely of Williams and Randy and Belinda Ely of Webster City; grandchildren, Terry Luhmann, Dale and Donna Luhmann, Rodney Luhmann, Dennis Luhmann, Kimberly Luhmann, Neal Luhmann, Brian and Casey Kahl, Randy Kahl, David and Lisa Ely and Scot Ely; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; brothers Ralph Ely and Earl and his wife Evelyn Ely of Boone; a sister, Irene Crowell of Ogden; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Martella, a son, John Eugene Ely, great-grandchild and three sisters.

Memorials may be directed to the discretion of the family.
