Joyce Duea, 63, Ames, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003 at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames with Rev. Glenn Kappelmann officiating. Burial will be in the Ames Municipal Cemetery. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Adams Funeral Home in Ames in is charge of arrangements.

Joyce Arends, daughter of Grover and Melba Tucker Arends, was born in Webster City March 27, 1939. She was a graduate of Williams High School and attended the University of Northern Iowa. She married James Duea on August 19, 1960 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Williams. They lived in Humboldt from 1960 to 1971 and she taught elementary school in Kanawha and Humboldt. She taught Head Start in Humboldt and later was a teaching assistant at Roosevelt Elementary School in Ames. She retired in 2001.

She was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church, Bethesda Lutheran Church Women, Mary Greeley Auxiliary, Order of the Eastern Star and Aurora Chapter in Fort Dodge. She was an avid sports fan, enjoyed family activities and loved flowers and music.

Survivors are her husband, James; daughter and son-in-law, Joelle and Bruce Vertanen of Ames; son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Christina Duea of Clive; grandchildren, Ben Duea of Clive and Kelsie and Samuel Vertanen of Ames; two sisters and brothers-in-law, her twin Jo and Mel Schroeder, Fort Dodge; Kathleen and Bob Artes of Britt; several nieces and nehews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Eva Jean Stephenson, and brother, Sherman Arends.
