William "Bill" Franklin Pelz, a community leader and the former mayor of Ames, died Sept. 27 of heart failure. He was 67.

Pelz served as mayor of Ames from 1973-75. He had also served on several community boards and committees, including the city's Zoning Adjustment Board, Civil Service Commission, the County Compensation Board, County Grand Jury and the Mayor's City Hall Committee.

"Bill quietly worked behind the scenes for the good of the city," said his friend and current Ames Mayor Ted Tedesco.

Pelz was born and raised in Blairsburg [the son of William M. and Ruth Marion Cole Pelz] and graduated from Iowa State University in 1960. He was an Ames property owner, landlord and self-employed businessman.

"Anytime that there is a loss of someone who serves the community, there is a loss and a void," Tedesco said.

Pelz also was active with the Iowa Democratic Party.

Funeral services were held Oct. 2 at Collegiate Presbyterian Church in Ames.

[he is buried in the Ontario Cemetery, Ames, Story Co., Iowa]
