Genevieve Sponsel, 86, of Blairsburg, died Thursday, June 9, 2005 at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Williams. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the Foster Funeral & Cremation Center with recitation of the Rosary at 3:45 p.m. followed by a scripture service. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Cheyenne Wells, Colorado.

Genevieve Elizabeth Calkins, daughter of James and Dorothy McCorkle Calkins was born April 1, 1919 at Esbon, Kansas. She received her education and graduated from Goodland, Kansas schools where she received her Normal Training Certificate for teaching and her Nursing Certificate. On April 22, 1939 she married Henry Anthony Sponsel at Goodland, KS. The couple resided at Goodland. She had worked as an L.P.N. and then as a R.T.A. for Keefe Memorial Hospital in Cheyenne Wells, Co. for over 20 years until her retirement at the age of 75. The couple moved to Blairsburg in 1993. Mr. Sponsel died on May 20, 1995.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Cecilia and Harold Smith of Dunlap, IA; son and daughter-in-law, Anthony J. and Betty A. Sponsel of Blairsburg; daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Ernest Flageolle of Westminster, CO.; 13 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and one great great grandson; brother and sister-in-law, Glen and Lois Calkins of Bellville, KS.; sister, Goldiemae Fowler of Cortez, CO.; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Henry, she was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Claude Calkins and two sisters, Dorothyphae Calkins and Evelyn Cossentine.

Mrs. Sponsel was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Williams. Her memberships also included, S.A.L.T. of Webster City and B.C.I.A. of Blairsburg. She especially enjoyed visiting with her Tuesday coffee group in Blairsburg and she was an avid bowler.
