Charles Edward Bertran, son of Frederick A. and Ann L. (Lemke) Hossman Bertran, was born March 26, 1924 in St. Joe, MO. At the age of 16, he moved with his family to Eagle Grove and joined the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1942-1942.

In 1943, Chuck enlisted with the Coast Guard, serving aboard the US Culter #42, Seattle, WA to Ketchan, AL. He was then transferred to the USS Onondaga, a coast guard ice culter patrolling the Bering Strait during World War II. After his honorable discharge in 1946, he returned to Eagle Grove.

On November 18, 1947, Charles married Thelma L. Hill. They moved to Oklahoma City, OK for a few years, returned to the Eagle Grove area due to his mother's ill health.

Charles became plant manager at Highview, residing with his family in Webster City. After the acquisition of Farm Fertilizer by National Distillers in 1960, Chuck became a sales rep for the company. He remained with the company through 2 more acquisitions, Texaco and Kaiser Chemical until his retirement in 1989. He and his wife Thelma managed the Hillcrest Mobile Home Park in Webster City for several years.

Charles enjoyed his sales career and the rewards for top salesman. He also enjoyed time with his family, working in the yard, gardening and woodworking.

Charles was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church in Webster City and a lifetime member of V.F.W. Post 1856.

Mr. Bertran, 81, passed away on Wednesday, April 20, 2005 at his home. He was preceded in death by his parents; step-father Frank; wife Thelma L. Bertran in 1998 and three brothers.

Survivors include his sons, Eldon Bertran and wife Penny of Beavercreek, OH, Bill Bertran and wife Mary of Webster City; daughter Teresa Ingle of Jackson, MS; grandchildren: William (Bill) Bertran and wife Colette, Jodi Messerly and husband Lance, Cody Bertran and wife Katie, Britne Bertran, all of Webster City and Scott Bertran and wife Ashley of Ohio; great-grandchildren: Maddie and Marie Bertran, Bryce Bertran and Jayde Bertran; sister-in-law, Gretje (Gret) Bertran of Florida and step-brother, Francis Hossman and wife Donna of Eagle Grove and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Foust Funeral home, Eagle Grove, is in charge of arrangements.
