Esther Juhl, 99, longtime resident of Webster City, quietly passed away on Monday, Nov. 19, 2001 at Hamilton Hospital following a very brief illness and surgery.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the Foster Funeral Home, Webster City.

Esther Jane Vegors, the daughter of Chancey and Mary (Bond) Vegors, was born into a pioneer Hamilton County family on March 15, 1902 on a farm south of Homer, Iowa. She was raised on Shady Oak Farm and received her elementary education at South Bend rural school near home. She attended Webster City High School and was graduated as a member of the class of 1922. She received additional education at business college in Waterloo.

On Oct. 24, 1924 she was united in marriage to Christian C. Juhl of the Homer area. They made their home in rural Webster County, three miles west of Homer where they were engaged in farming. Esther was the mother of two daughters, Beverly Lavone Juhl and Shirley Ann Juhl. She also raised her step-son, Norman C. Juhl.

Following her husband's death in 1953, Esther moved to Webster City and, since 1954, has made her home on Nancy Lane. She was known by many as she worked in several careers including that of Optometry and dental assistants. She also cared for her mother in her home until her mother's death at age 101.

Esther was a long-time and oldest member of the Washington Lutheran Church congregation in Duncombe. Other memberships during her lifetime included Business and Professional Women, Eastern Star, 4-H Leader, church circles and other professional organizations. She also enjoyed quilting.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Don (Shirley) Doolittle of rural Duncombe. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a stepbrother Lloyd Vegors, a brother Dr. Stanley Vegors, a twin brother Lestor Vegors, a sister Alis Dubbert, her daughter Mrs. John (Beverly) Ostlund, her stepson Norman Juhl and a grandson James Doolittle.

Services will be held on Friday, Nov. 23, 2001 at 12:30 p.m. at the Washington Lutheran Church in Duncombe with Pastor Dave Dekard officiating. A coffee will be served immediately following the service in the church basement. Private graveside rites will be held after for the family at North Lawn Cemetery in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Esther will be long remembered by her family and friends for her love of life, love of her family and love for her church...these were truly her cherished gifts.

Memorial donations may be made to Washington Lutheran Church, Duncombe.
