Daily Freeman Journal, Webster City, Iowa, Saturday, January 27, 1962

Carl Pates, 67, widely known Webster City druggist and pharmacist, died at 6:45 p.m. Friday at the Hamilton county hospital. He had been in ill health for several years.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Foster funeral home with the Rev. R.D. Kitterman officiating and with burial in Graceland cemetery.

Carl Arthur Pates, son of William and Laura Pates, was born March 28, 1894 at Lamar, Mo. When he was still a small boy, he moved with his parents to Jefferson, Iowa, where he was graduated from high school in 1913. He then attended the school of pharmacy at the University of Iowa, being graduated from there in 1916. His first position as a pharmacist was at Allerton, Iowa, following which he went to Centerville. He entered the U.S. navy in World War I.

After returning to civilian life, in March, 1919 he moved to Webster City and was employed at the former Buster Brown Drug store. He continued to be associated with the drug store when it was purchased by B.W. Miller and Harry Jensen in 1936 and was renamed the Miller Drug.

On Jan. 1, 1937, Mr. Jensen sold a quarter interest of the then Jensen Drug to Mr. Pates. He continued in this partnership until April, 1949, when Mr. Pates sold his interest and retired from active pharmacy work.

He was united in marriage April 5, 1923 to Claire Criswell, and the couple had always since made their home in Webster City.

He is survived by his wife, one son and one daughter: Dr. Don C. Pates of Belding, Mich., and Mrs. Jack (Shari) Read of Stanhope; five grandchildren, Carla, Karen and Colleen Pates and Jill and David Read; two brothers, Roy Pates of Des Moines and Walter Pates of St. Louis.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Earl.

He was a member of the Methodist church, the Masonic lodge, the Elks lodge and the American Legion.

[when his wife passed away in 2001 her obituary listed her maiden name as Griswell which was a typo but I'm including both for anyone looking for the family]
