Chester (Chet) McNelly, 86, Webster City, died Friday, August 31, 2001 at the Southfield Wellness Community. Memorial services will be held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Asbury United Methodist Church with Rev. Mike Morgan and Cindi O'Brien, ministry assistant officiating. Burial will be prior to the memorial service in the Saratoga Cemetery south of Webster City. The family will receive friends prior to the service at the church. Foster Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Chester Hibbard McNelly, son of Chester L. and Florence Hibbard McNelly, was born June 21, 1915 at McIntosh, Mn. In 1933, he graduated from the Anoka, Mn. high school. He attended the University of Minnesota at St. Paul. He served with the U.S. Army for three years in occupied Japan. On Sept. 7, 1938, he married Olive Helen Dorothy Conradi at Anoka. The couple resided at McIntosh, Anoka and Vinton, Ia. and in 1951 moved to Webster City. He had worked in the U.S. Government Service in Soil Conservation for 30 years. He retired in 1974. He drove a school bus for the Webster City School System for 10 years. Mrs. McNelly died Oct. 29, 2000. He had resided at Southfield since January of this year.

Chet is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Jerre and Jim Salzer of Westfield, Ma., Elizabeth and Dave Weieneth, Mary Burtnett and Sarah McNelly, all of Webster City; sons and daughters-in-law, Chet and Jan McNelly, Donald and Paris McNelly, all of Webster City; 11 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren; brothers, Fred McNelly of Belle Vista, Ar., Richard McNelly of Edina, Mn.; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; brother Dean McNelly and sister Gertrude Christianson.

He was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church, Methodist Men, American Legion Post #191, Diamond K Kiwanis, RSVP, a Boy Scout leader for 20 years, a U-Share volunteer and enjoyed his Iowa State Fair working experiences. In Masons, he served as past Worshipful Master, past Worthy Patron of the Order of Eastern Star, Triune Commandery #41 and Hope Chapter #88.
