Blairsburg man kills self

Clair Caquelin, 33 a former two-term Blairsburg mayor, apparently committed suicide over the New Year's weekend at his home.

He was discovered with a gunshot wound to the head at 1:43 a.m. Sunday and pronounced dead at the scene by the Webster City rescue squad.

Caquelin, a former Coop Elevator employee, was most recently employed as a truck driver by Casey's General Stores. A complete obituary is printed elsewhere on this page.

Clair L. Caquelin, 33, of Blairsburg died early Sunday morning at his home at Blairsburg. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 4, at 1:30 p.m. at the UCC Congregational Church at Blairsburg, with the Rev. Leroy Franz officiating. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Webster City.

Visitation will be at the Foster Funeral Home after 7 p.m. today (Monday) until 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Clair LaVerne Caquelin, the son of Clair and Margaret (Simpson) Wepel, Sr., was born March 4, 1955 at Webster City. He was education in various schools across the country, including Webster City, and was married to Janine Sesker on Aug. 24, 1974, at Webster City.

The couple resided at Blairsburg, where he was employed at the Blairsburg Coop Elevator for 11 years, and for the past three years had been a truck driver for Casey's General Stores.

Surviving are his wife, Janine, two sons, Joseph and Daniel, and one daughter Charma, all at home; his mother and step-father, Margaret and Roscoe Whipple of Dows; his father and step-mother, Clair and Eva Wepel of Ankeny; two sisters, Kathy Dixon and Pamela Moore of Webster City; three brothers, Bill Caquelin of Webster City, Robert Caquelin of Duncombe and Rodger Caquelin of Dows; grandparents John and Lillie Wepel of Webster City and Harley Simpson of Dows. Also, a half-sister Lori Wepel of Des Moines; a step-brother Randy Wepel of Ankeny; and two step-sisters, Karen Stock and Connie Binder, both of Cedar Rapids; and several aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his adopted father, John R. Caquelin, his grandmother Alice Simpson, and one brother in infancy.

He was a former mayor of Blairsburg for four years.
