Mrs. Nellie Barnes, 70, a former Blairsburg resident, died last evening at the Sartori General hospital in Cedar Falls after a sudden illness.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the United Church of Christ, Congregational, Blairsburg. Burial will be in the Blairsburg cemetery.

Friends may call at the Foster Funeral home until 10 a.m. Saturday when the casket will be taken to the church.

Nellie Naomi Ewing, daughter of William and Annie Billings Ewing, was born April 13, 1909 at Duncombe. She was reared and educated in the Duncombe community.

On Feb. 25, 1929, she was married to Bert Barnes and the couple moved to Illinois where they farmed for two years in McClean county, returning to Iowa and farming in the Fort Dodge vicinity.

For 20 years, they farmed in Liberty township near Blairsburg.

Mr. Barnes preceded her in death in January, 1963, and she continued to reside in Blairsburg for two years. She then moved to Cedar Falls where she was a house mother for the University of Northern Iowa for four years at which time she retired.

She is survived by one son, LeRoy Barnes of Blairsburg; six grandchildren; one brother and two sisters, Carl Ewing, Webster City, Mrs. Joe (Pearl) Zeka, Fort Dodge and Mrs. LuVerne (Grace) Koestner, Seattle. Wash.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Mrs. Vernon (Anna Marie) Stumme in 1976; by her parents and four brothers.

She was a member of the United Church of Christ, Congregational in Blairsburg.
