Metta Christena Nelson, 100, died of complications from a stroke on Saturday, July 21 at Bethany Manor in Story City where she had been a resident since September of 1997. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 24 at 10:30 a.m. at the Bethany Manor in Story City and on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Bethesda Lutheran church in Jewell with Pastor Sandy Anenson and Pastor Dale Peterson officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Jewell.

Tena was born June 24, 1901 to Peter and Johanna (Nielson) Nielson (later changed to Nelson) on a farm north of Jewell. She was baptized on Sept. 1, 1901 in the Danish Lutheran Church and was confirmed on Nov. 29, 1925 at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell where she remained a lifelong member. She was educated in rural schools and attended college at Ellsworth College in Iowa Falls and Teachers College in Cedar Falls. Tena taught in several rural schools and at Elk Horn. She taught Sunday school for over 30 years and also taught daily vacation bible school. Tena was active in community and church activities and a lifelong member of Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell. Tena enjoyed many crafts such as ceramics, rosemalling, painting, crocheting, knitting along with flower and vegetable gardening and baking.

Tena is survived by a nephew, Sterling Nelson, Rogers, Ark., and two nieces, Ruth Grimsley, Randall and June Teigland, Cedar Rapids; great-nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Clarence and Carl Martin Nelson, a sister, Alice Shaw, and a niece, Clara Leeman.

Visitation will be held on Monday from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at Becker Funeral Home in Jewell.

A memorial fund has been established at Bethany Manor or Bethesda Lutheran Church.
