Lerlene Matthew

Lerlene Matthew, 87, Cedar Rapids, formerly of Webster City, died Sunday, April 17 at St. Lukes Hospital in Cedar Rapids.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 21 at the Foster Funeral Home with Rev. Al Rusk officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 8 a.m. until the service time on Thursday.

Lerlene May Boynton, daughter of Charles and Bertha Thompson Boynton, was born Nov. 1, 1900, on a farm near Webster City. She attended the rural schools in the area. On Dec. 21, 1924, she married Lloyd Matthew at Webster City. The couple resided here. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1939. Mrs. Matthew taught rural school in Hamilton County and served in as a deputy in the Hamilton County Treasurer's office for 20 years, retiring in 1965. She moved to Cedar Rapids in 1985.

Survivors are one son and daughter-in-law, Bernie and Sandy Matthew of Cedar Rapids; five
grandchildren, Connie Stedman and Kent Matthew of Illinois, Michael, Lisa, and Matt Matthew, all of Cedar Rapids; a step-granddaughter, Darcy Smejkal of Cedar Rapids; four great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and one sister.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Webster City and was active in church functions.
