Stratford Courier
June 5, 1930

Andrew William Anderson was born in Sweden, Oct. 15, 1841, and died at the home of his daughter in Stratford May 31, 1930, at the age of 88 years, 7 months, 16 days.

Funeral services were held at the Baptist church Tuesday afternoon and were conducted by Rev. Carl J. Ackerman, of Brainerd, Minn. Interment was made in the South Marion cemetery.

Deceased came to this country with his parents in 1853, his mother passing away on ship board enroute and was buried at sea. His father settled at ?, Ill., where deceased grew to manhood. He came to Iowa in 1866 and has resided in the Stratford and Stanhope vicinities ever since. In 1868 he was married to Christina Walstrom and two children were born to them: William and Hannah. In 1885 he married Anna Johnson, who preceded him in death in 1899. Four children were born of this union, a daughter, who died in infancy, Samuel, Alyce and Arthur. He is survived by four children: William and Samuel, of Stanhope, Mrs. W.O. Clanahan, of Stratford; also three grandchildren, many other relatives and a host of friends.

He was baptized and joined the Baptist church many years ago and even in his last declining years never missed attending church each Sunday when he could possibly go on. Perhaps no man was better known in Stratford and in Stanhope than Mr. Anderson. He was honest and upright in all his dealings and due to his unusual free hearted and generous disposition during his lifetime attracted many friends. The latchstring was always outside on his door and many of the newcomers, having a hard time getting started in a new country, got help from him in time of need. He was a kind and indulgent father, a true friend and a good neighbor and his cheerful disposition will be missed keenly.
