Sam Swedlund, 94, widely known Stratford resident, died at 9:20 a.m. Monday at the Mellor nursing home in Ames where he had been living since Nov. 25.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock in Calvary Methodist church at Stratford, with the Rev. Otto S. Steele officiating. Burial was made in the South Marion cemetery.

Samuel Swedlund, son of Peter and Mary Swedlund, was born Nov. 29, 1861, on a farm near Stratford. He received his education in the Stratford schools and lived his entire life in that community.

He was united in marriage Sept. 10, 1891 to Mary Ann Berggren. For many years, Mr. Swedlund was engaged in the hardware and implement business. He retired from that business 15 years ago and became agent for the Swedish Mutual Insurance Co. of Madrid.

He was preceded in death by his wife, who died August 31, 1955, by one son, Carl, his parents, two sisters and five brothers. He is survived by one son and four daughters: Merrill Swedlund of Indianapolis, Ind., Mrs. P.T. (Clarice) Christensen of Grinnell; Mrs. Dale (Myrtle) Bond of Ames; Miss Irene Swedlund, teacher in the Mason City schools, Mrs. Norman (Marie) Carpenter of Pacific Palisades, Calif.; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, and one brother, Charles Swedlund of Stratford.

Mr. Swedlund was baptized in the Methodist faith and a member of the Methodist church in Stratford where he was always active in church work. He was a member of the official board of the church.

A former mayor of Stratford, a justice of the peace and a member of the town council, he always took an immense interest in civic affairs.

Sam Swedlund, 94, Stratford, Is Dead

Sam Swedlund, 94, pioneer resident of Stratford, died unexpectedly Monday at an Ames Nursing home suffering from a stroke. He had been a resident of the nursing home since his wife died.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 o'clock from the Calvary Methodist church with the Rev. Otto Steele in charge with burial in South Marion cemetery.
