MRS. SAM SWEDLUND DIED SUNDAY, AUGUST 28TH

Mrs. Sam Swedlund, 92, longtime resident of Stratford, died at 1 p.m. Sunday, August 28 at her home in Stratford. She had been in failing health the past five years.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 31, at the Methodist Church in Stratford, preceeded by a brief service at the family home, with the Rev. Otto Steele officiating and burial was made in South Marion Cemetery.

Mary Ann Berggren, daughter of John and Anna Berggren, was born February 25, 1863, at Bishop Hill, Illinois. Her father was a Methodist pastor and the family located in several communities in Illinois and Iowa. Mr. Berggren was pastor at the Methodist Church in Des Moines where she was an organist at the church. She also was a professional dressmaker in Des Moines.

The family later moved to Stratford where Mr. Berggren served as minister. She was united in marriage September 10, 1891 to Samuel Swedlund. They were the first couple married in the South Marion Church. They had always made their home in that community since.

She is survived by her husband; one son and four daughters; Merrill Swedlund of Indianapolis, Ind., Mrs. P.T. (Clarice) Christensen of Grinnell, Mrs. Dale (Myrtle) Bond of Ames, Miss Irene Swedlund, teacher in the Mason City schools and Mrs. Norman (Marie) Carpenter, Pacific Palisades, California; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Carl, her parents, four sisters and three brothers.

She was baptized in the Methodist faith and was a member of the Methodist Church in Stratford where she was active in church work as long as her health permitted. Her church, family and home were her main interests in life.
