John W. Swedlund Dies at Hospital

John W. Swedlund, 97, died at the Boone county hospital Sunday evening. He broke his hip August 23 and failed to recover from that fall.

Mr. Swedlund was born in a log cabin west of Stratford and had farmed in that area until his retirement many years ago.

Survivors include a son Earl, Stratford and two daughters, Mrs. James (Mae) Erickson, 410 Tama street and Mrs. Tollie Carlson, 1324 Greene street. Mr. Swedlund made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Erickson. Also surviving are three brothers, Sam, Albert and Charles, all of Stratford, six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Swedlund preceded her husband in death in 1928.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 6, at 1:15 p.m. at the Welin chapel and at 2 o'clock from the South Marion church with the Rev. Gunn in charge. Burial will be in the South Marion cemetery.

JOHN WESLEY SWEDLUND

Funeral services for John Wesley Swedlund were held on Wednesday, October 6, 1954, at the South Marion Methodist church where he had been a member for 54 years. They were held at 2 p.m. following a prayer at the Welin funeral chapel, Boone, with the Rev. Maurice A. Gunn officiating.

"Nearer My God To Thee," "Rock Of Ages" and "Asleep in Jesus" were sung by Mrs. Ed Johnson of Stratford and Mrs. Lester Carlson of Boone, accompanied by Mrs. Will Holstrom of Stratford.

Pallbearers were six grandsons, Eldren Carlson, Embert Carlson, Marion Carlson, Ivyl Carlson, Dean Swedlund and Weldon Swedlund.

Burial was at the South Marion cemetery.

John Wesley Swedlund, son of Peter and Mary Swedlund was born September 9, 1857, in a log cabin in the vicinity of Swede Bend, and died at the Boone county hospital on Sunday, October 3, 1954, at the age of 97 years and 24 days. His death was partially caused as the result of a broken hip sustained several weeks previously.

His parents were some of the few early settlers in the Stratford vicinity coming there from Sweden in the early 1850s.

Mr. Swedlund was married to Emma Sanderson on December 18, 1879, and to this union five children were born. A daughter, Clara Esther died while quite young and a son died in infancy. He was also preceded in death by his parents, his wife, who died on June 30, 1928; one sister and two brothers.

In 1900, Mr. Swedlund joined the South Marion Methodist church and in 1928, following his wife's death, he moved to Boone and had since made his home with his daughter, Mrs. James Erickson. On account of the distance from Boone, he was unable to attend church services regularly, however he attended whenever possible.

Mr. Swedlund had lived most of his life in Stratford and Boone, with the exception of seven years at Storm Lake.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Tollie Carlson and Mrs. James Erickson of Boone; a son Carl Swedlund of Stratford; three brothers, Sam, Albert and Charles, all of Stratford; six grandchildren; other relatives and a host of friends.

The entire Swedlund family was well represented at the services and included two of the surviving brothers, Charles and Sam Swedlund, the other brother, Albert is progressing nicely from recent surgery, but was unable to attend.

FORMER RESIDENT PASSED AWAY SUNDAY IN BOONE HOSPITAL

J.W. Swedlund, 97, of Boone, a one-time resident of Stratford, passed away Sunday evening in the county hospital at Boone, where he had been a surgical and medical patient since breaking his hip in a fall several weeks ago.

Mr. Swedlund was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one sister and two brothers.

He is survived by three brothers, two daughters, one son and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon in the South Marion church. Interment was in the South Marion cemetery.
