Funeral services for the late Miss Augusta Swanson, former Boone woman who succumbed in Denver, were held here Wednesday afternoon at the Welin Funeral home with the Rev. Harold H. Stark, pastor of the Marion street M.E. church in charge, at 1:45 o'clock and at the Marion street church at 2 o'clock.

Mesdames James Nutt and John Shelley sang "The Old Rugged Cross," "In That City," and "Rock of Ages," with Mrs. Virgil B. Davis accompanying. Mesdames Charles Rea and Don Settle were in charge of the floral tributes.

Casket bearers were E.E. Ward, H. Pancratz, Thomas Heaps, E.W. Thorson, Albert Anderson and R.A. Williams. Interment was in the South Marion cemetery near Stratford.

Miss Augusta Caroline Swanson was born in Sweden, Dec. 28, 1861, and died in Denver, Colo., Oct. 2, 1932. She came with her parents to America in 1868 and their home was near Stratford, later in the town of Stratford.

In 1903, at the death of her sister, Mrs. W.B. Sherman, she came to Boone to care for the four children who were left motherless and continued to reside in the old home and assist in the care of Mr. Sherman during his illness until she left for Denver a year ago.

Her mother passed away in 1904 and Grandpa Swanson, who died in 1921, spent his last few years with her in the Sherman home in Boone. Miss Swanson was affectionately known as "Auntie" and her ambition in life was to do for others.

She was a home body, enjoying the friendship of neighbors and the comfort of her church associations. She mentioned during her illness how greatly she missed her church.

Just a year ago she went to Denver, Colo., to make her home with her niece and nephew, Marie and Gail Haliday - but the high altitude developed extremely high blood pressure which caused her death Sunday afternoon.

She leaves to mourn her passing: the brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. N.A. Swanson, two nieces, Miss Esther Swanson and Mrs. Alton Anderson, two nephews, R.N. Swanson and Dr. C.E. Swanson, all of Denver. Two nieces, Mrs. August Schwein and Mrs. Edith Crawford of Boone, also the niece in Denver, Mrs. Halliday, also nieces and nephews, Mrs. Bernadine Fox of Los Angeles, Donna Halliday of Denver, Colo., and LaVerne, Catherine, Marjory and Clarence Schwein of Boone, and a number of cousins residing in Boone and vicinity.

One niece, Mrs. Emma Sherman Johnson, passed away in September, 1917, after an illness during which she was lovingly cared for by "Auntie."

A long life of usefulness, of humbleness, of thinking of the comfort of others before her own - that sums up the life of "Auntie" Swanson and though she will be sadly missed we know she has gone to her reward and that she is safe in the arms of Jesus. - Boone Daily News Republican
