TWO PIONEER RESIDENTS SUMMONED FROM OUR MIDST

C.A. Swanson, 88, of Stratford, passed away Saturday evening, Sept. 9, in the home of the Rev. and Mrs. F.O. Abraham, at Harcourt, after an illness of several years.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Stratford Baptist church, with the Rev. Arthur Westerhoff officiating, assisted by the Rev. Abraham.

Mr. Swanson is survived by two sons, three daughters, 16 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one daughter, one grandson and three sisters.

C.A. Swanson

Carl Adolf Swanson passed away in the home of the Rev. and Mrs. F.O. Abraham at Harcourt at 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 9, at the age of 88 years, 2 months and 7 days.

Carl Adolf Swanson, son of Swen and Anna [Lovisa Johansdotter Engberg] Swanson, was born the 19th day of June, 1862, at Wetlands, Sweden, where he received his education, and was confirmed in Jasjo, Sweden in 1876. He came to America in 1881 and was converted in 1890 at Lost Grove, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Hulda A. Peterson Mar. 20, 1891 and they lived on a farm south of Stratford many years. To this union was born 2 sons and 4 daughters.

He was a member of the South Marion Methodist church for 25 years. In 1917 they moved to Stratford to make their home and later joined the Baptist church, of which he was a faithful member as long as health permitted.

In 1941, Mr. and Mrs. Swanson celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in Stratford, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Hulda, who passed away April 12, 1950, a daughter, Dora, who went to be with the Lord in 1913 at the age of 8 years, and 3 sisters.

He is survived by his 2 sons, Carl E., of Garrison, Iowa, and Fred J., of Chillicothe, Mo., 3 daughters, Mrs. Robert Ruby (Linnea) of Roswell, N.M., Mrs. Arthur Leaf (Marie) of Bell's Mill community, Mrs. George Alden (Anna) of Ames, 16 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, many other relatives and a host of friends.

He was a kind and loving father and always put his home and family above all else.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 12, in the Baptist church, with the Rev. Arthur Westerhoff in charge, assisted by the Rev. F.O. Abraham of Harcourt. Interment was made in the South Marion cemetery.
