John Sturtz, 85, of Webster City, formerly of Duncombe, died Saturday, January 10, 2004 at Crestview Senior Living in Webster City. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at Foster Funeral Home, Webster City with Pastor Roger Kurtenbach officiating. Burial will be in Vegors Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post B#491 of Duncombe. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

John Wilson Sturtz, son of Walter and Gertrude Bowman Sturtz, was born November 4, 1918 at Boone, Iowa. He graduated from Boone Senior High School in 1937. During WWII, he served with the U.S. Army where he was stationed in New Foundland. On September 17, 1945 he married Caroline Sharp at Troy, KS. The couple resided in Boone. He farmed in the Boone and Stratford areas before moving to Duncombe in 1962. Mr. Sturtz was also employed as a salesman for Walnut Grove and M&M Livestock Feed, Gambles Store in Webster City and Ferguson's Hardware in Fort Dodge before retiring in November of 1980. Mrs. Sturtz died on June 15, 1993.

He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Walt and Linda Sturtz of Maquoketa, Pat and Mary Sturtz of Manson; daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Clayton Swanson of Clear Lake; seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Thresa Sturtz of Boone.

In addition to his wife Caroline, he was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Virgil and Marvin Sturtz; sister in infancy, Rosabelle Sturtz and granddaughter, Jenny Swanson.

Mr. Sturtz was a member and former legion commander of the American Legion Post #491 of Duncombe. He also served as a councilman and former Mayor of Duncombe. John enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping with his wife, was an avid mushroom hunter and liked gardening and sharing his produce. He also enjoyed feeding the birds and always had a wrenhouse in his yard. He generally enjoyed being outdoors.
