Obituary
Mrs. Caroline Ferlen

Mrs. Caroline Ferlen, nee Erickson, was born in Ulrika socken, Östergötland, Sweden, on Sept. 18, 1845 and died in the home of her nephew, Tilghman Ferlen, Jan. 10, 1937, at the age of 91 years, 4 months, 2 days.

She came to America with her parents, sisters and brothers in October, 1851. On Jan. 22, 1867 [alternate Jan. 21], she was united in marriage to Swan Ferlen and for several years they lived in Boone and then moved to Salina, Kan., where she resided until the death of her husband in October, 1925.

Mr. and Mrs. Ferlen had one foster son, Nils Ferlen, of Denver, Colo., with whom Mrs. Ferlen made her home following the death of her husband until the son died. Though having no children of their own, this worthy couple helped several young persons to obtain a college education.

Four years ago Mrs. Ferlen came to Stratford and had since made her home with Mr. and Mrs. T.H. Ferlen who have tenderly cared for her. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jonas Erickson, one sister and two brothers have preceded her in death. Left to mourn her death are one sister, Mrs. Louise Engstrom of Corning, several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held in the Baptist church Wednesday afternoon and were in charge of the pastor, the Rev. A.E. Appelquist. Three songs were sung by a quartette composed of Ann Lindblom, Pauline Naslund, Annamae Johnson and Vernice Johnson. Following the service the remains were taken to the South Marion cemetery for interment. The pallbearers were nephews of deceased and were: J.L. Shaeffer, T.H. Ferlen, Elmer Ferlen, F.T. Ferlen, James Erickson and J.C. Ritchie.
