Carlson

Christian Carlson was born at Vexio [Öja, Växjö], Sweden, Feb. 10, 1843 and died at his home in Stratford, November 30, 1920, at the age of 77 years, 9 months and 20 days.

He was confirmed in Sweden in the Lutheran faith in 1857. Was united in marriage to Marie Johnson October 10, 1866. They immigrated to America during the month of June, 1869 and settled on a farm in the Clear Lake neighborhood where they lived continuously until 1903. That year they moved to Stratford where both lived until death called them to their reward. The wife and mother passed away seven years ago, and the youngest daughter, Miss Anna, died about eighteen months ago. Three sons and three daughters still survive. They are: Carl, August and Theodore, Mrs. W.A. Anderson, Mrs. G.A. Lundquist and Miss Emma, all of whom are residents of this community. Twenty-four grand children and other relatives also survive beside one sister and other relatives in Sweden. A great number of friends to this good old man also mourn his passing.

Deceased was one of the pioneer settlers of this section and about his life is woven much of the early history of this region of fertile Iowa. By earnest endeavor and hard labor he eked out a meager living for him and his in that early day of wild unsettled prairie land and in common with other pioneers worked out problems then which have been the making of Iowa of today. Always pleasant even during his illness, his ever ready smile created an atmosphere of pleasantness about everyone and his hearty day's greetings made life seem more pleasant at all times.

Funeral services were held at the M.E. church Thursday, December 2 at 1:00 p.m. conducted by Rev. Wilson. A mixed quartet sang, "Lead Me Gently Home Father," "He Knoweth It All," and "One Sweetly Solemn Thought." The pall bearers were J.W. Swedlund, O.W. Holstrum, P. Leksell, Jonas Lundquist, Alex Swedlund and Andrew Rehnblom. The interment took place in the South Marion cemetery.
