WC man killed in crash

A single-vehicle accident shortly after midnight Sunday claimed the life of a Webster City man.

Killed in the accident was James Elvin Barker Jr., age 29. Barker was killed when his vehicle overturned and he was thrown from it about one mile north of Webster City on County Blacktop R-27.

Also injured was Mark Anthony Draeger, Webster City. He was transferred to Des Moines Mercy Hospital by Mercy Air Life helicopter Sunday morning, and listed there in serious condition with head injuries at noon today. A hospital spokeswoman said he did not require surgery.

According to the report, the vehicle, a 1973 two-door four-wheel-drive Chevrolet Blazer - in which the two were riding went into the south ditch, struck an earthen bank, went airborne, landed and rolled, resting upside down. The occupants were thrown into a cornfield.

The accident is still under investigation. A spokeswoman for the Hamilton County sheriff's department said it was not known whether the occupants were wearing seat belts. Which person was driving the vehicle was also not immediately known.

James E. Barker, Jr., 29, of Webster City, died early Sunday morning, Aug. 9, following a one-vehicle accident northwest of Webster City.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 12 at 1:30 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Raymond Roden officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery.

Friends may call at Foster Funeral Home until Wednesday, Aug. 12 at 9:30 a.m. when the casket will be taken to the church.

James E. Barker Jr., son of James and Phyllis Wells Barker, was born Sept. 23, 1957 at Webster City. He graduated from Webster City High School in 1976. He was employed at the Bow Lounge in Webster City and also worked for the Clean-All Janitor Service.

He is survived by his parents; two sisters, Marene (Mrs. Kelly) Hubbard and Elizabeth A. Barker of Webster City; one brother, Robert A. Barker of Webster City; two grandmothers, Margaret Barker of Corydon and Mildred Wells of Webster City, two nieces, Jennifer and Beth Hubbard of Webster City; and one nephew, Brian Hubbard of Webster City.

He was preceded in death by his two grandfathers.

He was a member of ABATE.
