Harold Leverne Doolittle, 80, died June 28, 2000 at Pleasant Care Nursing Home in Novato, Calif. Memorial services were held July 3, 2000 at Keaton's Chapel in Novato and burial was in the Los Angeles National Veterans Cemetery.
A native of Blairsburg, Harold Leverne Doolittle was born to Guy Howard Doolittle and Mary Gish Hoffman Doolittle on July 26, 1919. He moved to Pennsylvania after the death of his mother in about 1932. As a teenager, he lived with the Hoffman family in Elizabethtown, Penn. After high school graduation, he served in the Mediterranean in the Army Air Corps from 1941 to 1946. He was a corporal in the 47th Bombardment group, fighting in North Africa and Italy. He was also a carpenter and studied civil engineering. He married Mildred Lois Brown of Elizabethtown on March 7, 1947. They resided in Whittier, Calif., moving to Montebello, Calif. in 1956. She preceded him in death at the age of 49.
He received his AA degree in Engineering at East Los Angeles College, becoming a draftsman for the city of Los Angeles Department of Traffic, retiring after 20 years in 1971. He resided at the Veteran's Home of California in Yountville from 1977 until 1994.
Survivors are his brother Floyd Doolittle, South Bend, Ind., his sister Betty Vanderveer of Redding, Calif., three children, Lois MacMillan of Littleton, Colo., Donald Doolittle of Oakland, Calif., and Mary Swirsky of Yerington, Nev.; four grandchildren, three nieces and six grandnephews.
He is also survived by cousins, Donald F. Doolittle, Marcelyn Gordon, Ruby Nail, Doris Jeanne Templer, Lyman, Loren, Glenn and Esley Greiner and Hester Fleming.
