Vernon "Bud" Brandt, 78, Cherokee, a former Webster City resident, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City. Services were held Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee with Rev. Timothy Schott officiating. Burial was in the Mount Calvary Cemetery in Cherokee.

Vernon K. Brandt, son of Helmer and Lena Caquelin Brandt, was born March 26, 1921 near Woolstock. He attended Webster City High School, graduating in 1939. He married Shirley Hadaway of Stanhope in 1941. He drove a semi-truck and worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad in Yuma, AZ before entering the U.S. Army in 1943. He served in the America Theatre of Operations and was discharged as a platoon sergeant in March, 1946. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in 1950 and promoted in 1953. He served as a platoon leader and company commander and was promoted to captain in 1954. He was promoted to major and served as battalion staff officer and assistant division transportation officer of the 234th transportation brigade.

He was a graduate of the infantry school, Fort Benning, GA., and the Army Transportation School, Fort Eustis, VA., and retired a Lt. Colonel in 1969 after serving 26 years in the military. On Feb. 18, 1977, he married Marjorie Staley Knutson at Elk Point, SD. He worked as a deputy sheriff for Hamilton County for 15 years prior to being employed by the Maudlin Construction Co. of Webster City. He retired in 1983. He later worked for Ray Ames of Cleghorn and Walker Sand and Gravel of Cherokee.

Survivors are his wife, two sons and daughter-in-law, Randall and Rebecca Brandt of Anchorage, AK., Thomas of Honolulu, HI., three step-daughters and spouses, Shirley and Doug Radtke, Sioux Falls, SD., Linda and Tom Ambrose of Fairbury, IL., Nancy McLaughlin, Aurelia, IA., one step-son, Don Knutson of Sioux Falls, SD., one sister, Berniece Vogt, Des Moines, a brother, Max Brandt of Minnesota, 14 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, V.K. Buddy Jr., one brother, Donald, and a sister in infancy.
