Pat (J.P.) Laughlin, 79, a former Webster City mayor and longtime businessman, died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999 at Southfield Care Center. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church with Rev. John Walsh officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. Monday at the Foster Funeral Home and after 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church. A Rosary will be held at 6:45 p.m. Monday followed by a scripture service at 7 p.m. Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post #191 at the cemetery.

James Patrick Laughlin, son of Robert and Kathryn Jackman Laughlin, was born Nov. 9, 1919 at Emmetsburg. As a child, he moved with his parents to Mason City, graduating from the Holy Family high school. He attended Mason City Junior College and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1942. He served during World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a bombardier. On June 14, 1947 he married Doris Marie Krueger at Mason City. The couple resided in Webster City. He was a reseller salesman for Standard Oil Company. In 1950, he bought the Eastside Grocery. He served on the Webster City City Council from 1958 to 1966, serving as mayor in 1961 and 1962. He retired in 1984. He had been a resident of Southfield Care Center since December, 1998.

Survivors are his wife, Doris; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Diane Laughlin, Gladstone, MO., daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon Laughlin of Phoenixville, PA., Patricia and Tim Richards of Southbury, CT., Mary and George Kramer of Baudette, MN., grandchildren, Dennis and Adam Kramer, Kelly Laughlin, Jenna and Chelsea Richards; sister Margaret Morgan, Austin, MN., several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Robert, John and Jerry Laughlin, sisters Cassie Essley, Virginia Scott and Frances Amos.

He was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, a former Elks member, American Legion Post #191, and the Sigma Chi Fraternity.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to St. Thomas Aquinas Church or an Alzheimer's Association.
