Lester E. Barkema, 82, Story City, died Sept. 9, 1999 at Grand Avenue Care Center in Ames, where he was a patient for seven days. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Story City. Revs. Tom Hunt and Stephen Anenson will officiate. Burial will be in the Story City Cemetery. Visitation is at the Soderstrum Larson Funeral Home in Story City after 3 p.m. Friday with the family present from 6:30-8 p.m.

Lester E. Barkema was born March 17, 1917 at Jewell, the son of Harmon and Myrtle Mortenson Barkema. He married Alvina Olson on June 18, 1938 at Randall. He farmed west of Story City until moving into town in 1981 when he retired. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Survivors are his wife, Alvina; two daughters, Karon Jamison of Bee, NE., and Janet Pearson of Missouri City, TX; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, a sister, Erma Flygstad of Webster City and a brother, Floyd Barkema of Webster City.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Raymond Barkema.
