Avis Paine Stearns, 88, Webster City, died Wednesday, July 7, 1999 at the Crestview Manor Care Center. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Foster Funeral Home with Rev. Dale Schoening officiating. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 5-9 p.m. Thursday and prior to the service on Friday.

Avis Lavonne Shelton, daughter of Cecil and Mable Pierce Shelton, was born on August 1, 1910, on a farm south of Homer. She graduated from Webster City High School in 1928. She attended Iowa State University in Ames. She taught at the Homer school. On Sept. 21, 1929 she married John Howard Paine at Webster City. The couple farmed west of Webster City. Mr. Paine died April 30, 1974. She continued to reside on the family farm. On April 30, 1981 she married John Walter Stearns at Bethany, MO. The couple resided west of Webster City. Mr. Stearns died on July 16, 1997. She was a homemaker. Since June of 1996, she has resided at Crestview Manor.

Survivors are her son and daughter-in-law, Galord and LoEda Paine of Webster City, foster daughter, Betty Scott, Fort Dodge; grandson, Greg Paine, Webster City, great-granddaughter, Abby Avis Paine, three foster grandchildren, Rodney and Randy Scott, Barb Hanson, all of Fort Dodge; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, parents, a son, Howard C. Paine and a brother Rue Shelton.

She was a member of the Homer United Methodist Church, was a township clerk for Freedom Township for several years, Boone River Art Guild, superintendent of the Art Department for the Hamilton County Fair for several years.
