Helen Bates, 81, of Waterloo, a former Webster City resident, died Sunday, May 23, 1999 at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Foster Funeral Home with Rev. Doug Bullock-Tiffany officiating. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to service time Wednesday.

Helen Virginia Downs, daughter of Reuben and Hattie Critcher Downs, was born August 16, 1917. The family farmed near Webster City and she attended Webster City schools. On January 15, 1944 she married Clarence Peter Bates at Waterloo. The couple moved to Webster City where she worked at Selby Produce. In 1959, she moved to Williams and operated a Grill and Bar with her husband. Mr. Bates died August 23, 1964. She moved to Waterloo in 1978.

She is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Bob and Archie Downs; sisters, Nellie Adams, Thelma Lovelace, Maude Fortune, Cuba Jacobson, Mable Pohlman and Della Cooley.

She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church at Waterloo.
