Dorothy Mae Appelgate passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at the age of 97 while living at Bethany Life in Story City, Iowa. She was surrounded by family, friends and the caring staff at Bethany Life. Services took place on Monday, June 4 at 1:30 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church in Story City.

Dorothy was born on July 1, 1920 at Hamilton County Hospital in Webster City, Iowa to Clyde J. Rex and Alice Wilson Rex. She was the second oldest of four children. Her siblings were Mary Elizabeth, Clyde and little sister Alice Louise (Peggy).

Growing up she loved learning, caring for Elizabeth and keepings things moving in the house. Sister Peggy says she could never quite get the cow milking down so her strengths were in the home.

She was baptized and confirmed at St. Petri Lutheran Church. Her journey with the Lord was rich, constant and she herself said "I've only been what I've allowed God to make of me".

She married Glen Arthur Hoversten in 1938 and together farmed and raised six children, Glen Jr., Patty, Janet, Richard, Glenda and Joanne.

In February, 1974 she married William P. Appelgate and blended families with Bills children, William K. and Margaret.

Throughout these years she spent most of her life in Iowa with the exceptiuon of her time living in Little Rock, AR and Rutland, MA where she and Bill dedicated many years together serving the beautiful people around the world through their work with Heifer International.

Dorothy was selfless, adventurous, social, honest, caring, loving and giving. She loved gardening and flowers, reading, daily devotions and prayers for others, flowers, sending cards, embroidering tea towels, getting people together to enjoy company, play cards and Dominoes. Always thinking of others.

Those thankful for sharing her life: her children; Glen Hoversten Jr. and wife Pat, Patty Hoversten, Janet Wing and husband Lyle, Richard Hoversten, Glenda Rahfeldt and husband Ron, Joanne Pelant and husband Robert, William K. Appelgate and wife Joyce, and Margaret Aiseayew.

Grandchildren; Julie Wilson, (John) Larry Hoversten, Brenda Whipple (Dion), Don Hinderaker (Deb), Jon Wing, Tom Hinderaker (Angie), Mary Carey (Raimey), Chad Hoversten (Kala), Tracy Hoversten, Gary Hoversten, Willard Hoversten, Robin Ward, (Craig) Dawn Marie Risdal (Aaron), Rocke Rahfeldt (Angie), Zachary Pelant, Luke Pelant, Mollie Appelgate, Esther Bushman, Naomi Bailey (Collin).

And many special Great and Great Great Grandchildren!

Sister Peggy Hanson; Brother-in-law, Max Appelgate and Richard Appelgate (Joyce); sister-in-law Angie Appelgate and many nieces and nephews.

Those preceding her in death; husband William P. Appelgate, brother Clyde Rex, sister Mary Elizabeth and two infant brothers, grandson Travis Hoversten and granddaughter Linda Wing.

In lieu of flowers, memorial smay be addressed to the family for the following organizations: Grace Methodist Church, Story City, Iowa; Bethany Life, Story City, Iowa and Mobility Worldwide (PET).

In her last few days, one of her parting thoughts was "Love The Lord With All Your Might!"

Thank you to everyone who has walked this life with her, helping and loving her along the way and for your thoughtful and kind words of love and encouragement as we celebrate her life.
