Gary C. Handeland, age 80, of Stanhope, IA, passed away on Monday, June 25, 2018 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, IA.

A memorial service for Gary was held on Friday, June 29, at 10:30 am at the Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Stanhope. Gary's cremated remains were interred in the Lake Center Cemetery rural Stanhope.

The angels came and carried Gary Carlisle Handeland to his heavenly home, early on June 25, 2018. He was born at McCallsburg, Iowa on June 16, 1938 to Carl and Gertrude (Christianson) Handeland, the youngest of eight children. He always teased his siblings that mom saved the best to last.

He graduated from McCallsburg High School and attended Waldorf College.

He was united in marriage April 23, 1960 to Audrey Dudley. Three children enriched their lives, Craig, Kathy and Denise. They farmed in the McCallsburg, Nevada and Ames area for 29 years, before joining Gibbs Plumbing of Ames. In 2002 he started his own company, Handy Plumbing and he was working up until the time of his illness. He enjoyed working for his customers and often enjoyed a cup of coffee and visiting when the job was done. He also volunteered his plumbing skills for various community and church projects.

On June 15, 1996 he married his best friend, Janet Enderson, at the Reimen Gardens, in Ames, Iowa, and added two more children to his family, Ann Marie (Scott) Ringstad and Scott Enderson.

He loved to travel, especially driving to Alaska and in the mountains, fishing trips to Minnesota and Canada, collecting antique tools, reading, Sudoku's, and having coffee with his buddies at "Sparky's". He had a special love for children, especially his grand and great-grandchildren. Anytime he could get a hug from them, really made his days enjoyable.

Starting each morning, with his Lord and Savior, was the most important part of his day. He taught Sunday School, served on the church board and Story Co. Extension Council.

Those who will always hold his memory dear are his wife, Janet, Audrey Handeland; children, Craig (Linda) Handeland, Kathy Cartwright, Denise (Gary) Reischauer, Ann Marie (Scott) Ringstad; grandchildren, Makayla (Craig) Sanford, Josh Handeland, Rachel Handeland, Lyndsay (Jacob) Korte, Calli Tystahl, Brandon Cartwright, Holly Cartwright, Brett (Kristen) Ringstad, Matt (Kate) Ringstad, Tanner (Ashley) Enderson, Ross Enderson; great-grandchildren, Asher Korte, Rocco Korte, Mason Enderson, Carter Enderson, Aria Ringstad; siblings, Corene Rutzen, Ardis Swartz, Marilyn Holdredge, Wilma (Stan) Meyers, Shirley (Larry) Otta.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Ronnie Handeland, sister Lois Brandt, brothers-in-law Orville Rutzen and Bob Swartz, great-grandson Theo Korte and stepson Scott Enderson.

He was a kind, loving and gentle man, always looking for the good in others and willing to lend a helping hand where ever needed. He will forever be missed and in the hearts of his family and friends. Blessed be his memory!

Boeke Funeral Home of Radcliffe was in charge of arrangements.
