Funeral services for Eugene Westrum, 69, Stratford, were held Monday, Feb 15, 1999 at Calvary United Methodist Church, Stratford. Rev. Dale Schoening conducted the 2:00 p.m. service. Interment was held in South Marion Cemetery, Stratford. Arrangements were made by Stark-Welin Funeral Home, Stratford.
Mr. Westrum passed away Friday afternoon, Feb 12 at Israel Family Hospice House, Ames, due to complications from cancer.
Eugene Westrum was born Monday, Jan 6, 1930 in Boone County. He was the son of Martin and Mabel (Angstrom) Westrum. Eugene grew up in the Stratford community and graduated from Stratford High School in 1948.
On Sunday, Jan 29, 1950 Eugene was united in marriage to Arlys Fairchild at South Marion Methodist Church, Stratford. The couple farmed for 39 years south of Stratford on the Westrum home place. Following retirement from farming Eugene worked at Frigidaire, Webster City, for ten years and later at Dekalb and did maintenance work at Stratford Apartments.
Eugene was a member of South Marion United Methodist Church, past member of Stratford Lions Club, Stratford Development Corporation and Stratford Grain and Supply Elevator board.
Survivors include his wife, Arlys; daughters, Renea and Jim Poyzer, Des Moines; Rhonda and Denny Bell, Jesup; son, Tracy and Konni Westrum, Stratford; six grandsons, five granddaughters; brothers, Gayle and Betty Westrum and Lyle and Alice Westrum, all of Boone; Gerald Westrum, Stratford; sisters, Marietta and Ted Grabau, Boone; Marilyn and Dick Palmer, Vancouver, Wa; nieces, nephews, and cousins.
