Services held for Elmo A. Westrum, 76, Thursday, August 2

Funeral services for Elmo Andrew Westrum, 76, of Stratford were held Thursday, August 2 in the Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone. Rev. Dale Kelley conducted the 2:00 p.m. service. Interment was held in the South Marion Cemetery at Stratford. Arrangements were completed by the Hanson, Stark, Welin Funeral Home at Stratford.

Mr. Westrum passed away Monday, July 30 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. He had been a patient at the hospital for the past 30 days.

Elmo Andrew Westrum was born on December 29, 1896 in Marion Township, Hamilton County. He was the eldest son of Nels and Caroline [Bocklund] Westrum. He was raised and educated in the Stratford area.

He was married to Elsie Johnson on September 11, 1940. The couple lived in Stratford. He was engaged in farming and later became an agent for the Scandinavian Mutual Insurance Association of Dayton and IMT Insurance of Des Moines for 28 years.

Mr. Westrum was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church at Stratford where he served as vice chairman, deacon and was Sunday school superintendent for 14 years.

He had served as Mayor of Stratford for four years and was a member of the Stratford Lions Club and a past president and also a director of the Lions Club for many years. He served as Lion Zone chairman of District 9-E for one year.

He was a member of the River Valley Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of Dayton and Stratford where he served as secretary for 15 years and treasurer for three years.

Mr. Westrum was also a director of Stratford Grain and Supply Co-op for 26 years and served as president of the board for 16 years. He served as a trustee of Marion Township and was chairman of the Marion Township election precinct and was a director of the Bells Mill Old Settlers Association for eight years.

Survivors include the widow Elsie and three brothers, Ernest and Sidney of Stratford and Marvin of Longmount, Colo.; and also many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
