Obituary
Elick Swedlund

Following an illness of several weeks, Elick Swedlund died in the county hospital in Boone at 10:20 o'clock Wednesday night of last week. Taken ill a few weeks before he was treated in his home here and when his condition did not improve he was removed to the hospital.

Elick Swedlund, son of Peter and Mary [Anderson] Swedlund, was born on the Swedlund farm, south of Stratford, Jan. 11, 1860, and at his death on Jan. 13, 1943, he had reached the good old age of 83 years, 2 days. He grew to manhood in this community and on May 26, 1883, was united in marriage with Josephine Louise Peterson. Four children were born of this union, all of whom survive. They are: Mrs. Victor Holstrum, Mrs. B.E. Patterson, Misses Hannah and Ruby Swedlund who had been keeping house for their father since Mrs. Swedlund's death, Nov. 19, 1939.

Also surviving are five brothers: J.W., of Boone; A.J., Sam, O.L. and Charley, all of Stratford. He was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.

For many years after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Swedlund lived on their farm southeast of Stratford. A number of years ago they retired from the farm and moved to Stratford. Mr. Swedlund was very active for one of his years and kept himself busy by keeping a team of horses with which he plowed gardens for local residents and also used in small farming operations for himself. He was never satisfied unless he was busy at some task and was never happier than when busily engaged. At the same time he possessed a manliness of character that made him a friend to everyone.

A member of the South Marion Methodist church he was active in all phases of the work of that congregation.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon. At 1:30 a prayer service was held in the family home and at 2 o'clock in the South Marion Methodist church with the pastor, the Rev. W.J. Snaar, in charge. A quartette composed of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Bergquist, Mrs. Verlyn Fry and F.A. Nordblom, sang "Rock of Ages," "Nearer My God to Thee" and "Jesus Lover of My Soul," with Miss Margaret Monson playing the accompaniments. Interment was in the South Marion cemetery. The following were the casket bearers: A.E. Johnson, Edward Nelson, Fred Patterson, Charles Mott, W.R. Holstrum, Fred Engstrom.
