September 8, 1921

Mrs. Johanna Mathilda Johnson, whose death was briefly mentioned in this paper last week, was born Oct. 31, 1844, in West Harg, Ostergotland, Sweden. Her death occured at noon of August 28, 1921, at the age of 76 years, 9 months, 27 days.

February 13, 1873, she was united in marriage to Frank Wilhelm Johnson. Mr. Johnson came here from Sweden in 1880 and Mrs. Johnson and the three children who were born in Sweden came here the following year. They located in this community, living on farms in Webster and Hamilton Counties and moving into Stratford 14 years ago.

Seven children were born to the couple, all of whom are yet living. They are: P. M. Johnson, Sophia Lund, Oscar, Leonard and Charley, of Stratford; Edla Nelson, of St. Paul, Minn., Clara King of Benicia, California. Besides the children and the husband, deceased leaves one brother, Charley Peterson of this place; 14 grandchildren and many other relatives to mourn her passing. Six sisters have preceded her in death.

Until Sept. 23, 1918, Mrs. Johnson has enjoyed the best of health, but at that time she suffered a paralytic stroke which incapacitated her for the rest of her life. During those years which followed she suffered several more strokes but between these was able to converse with her husband and children until about a week before her death when she suffered another stroke from which she never recovered.

She was a tender and loving wife and mother and a good neighbor. During her long illness she was patient and never complained of her lot and was tenderly cared for by her children and husband. She was a faithful member of the Lutheran Church and enjoyed attending the services as long as she was able to.

The funeral was held August 31 from the home and from the Lutheran Church with interment in the South Marion Cemetery.
