Edward M. Holt

E. M. Holt, well known and highly respected resident of this community for many years, died at his farm southeast of Stratford Friday following an illness of about three weeks.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon, a brief service being conducted in the family home at 1:30 o'clock, followed by a service in the local Methodist church at 2 o'clock. These services were in charge of a former pastor of the church, the Rev. C. R. Yeager, of Dolliver. A mixed quartet, composed of Mrs. J.L. Wilke of Webster City, Mrs. George Peterson, A.T. Johnson and Sam Swedlund, sang several numbers. Many beautiful floral offerings showed the esteem in which the deceased was held. The service was attended by a great many who came to pay their last respects to a departed friend. Following the service interment was made in the South Marion Cemetery.

Edward M. Holt was born on a farm south of Stratford Dec. 25, 1872, and died Sept. 21, 1934, at the age of 61 years, 8 months, 27 days. He was married March 15, 1899 to Miss Anna Lundberg. One son was born of this union. Mrs. Holt died Dec. 28, 1907. During her illness the family moved to Boulder, Colo., and lived there for a number of years.

He was married on March 3, 1914 to Mrs. Almeda [Samuelson] Goens. Following their marriage they lived in town until last year when they moved to Boone, residing there until the spring of this year when they moved onto his farm, where he died.

When a young man he united with the South Marion Methodist Church but a few years ago transferred his membership to the local Methodist church.

He leaves to mourn his death, his bereaved wife, his son, Einar of Chicago, two step daughters, Mrs. Pearl Beongher of near Stanhope and Mrs. Grace Peters of St. Paul, Minn., one brother, Andie Holt of Stratford, one sister, Mrs. Emil Anderson of Luverne, several grandchildren, other relatives and a large number of friends.

Deceased was a forward moving citizen and during the years that he lived in town built and sold a number of very nice, residence properties. He was progressive and always took a great deal of pride in keeping his properties in the very best of shape. His death just at a time when he might have had further enjoyment out of his labors in early life is regrettable and he leaves a host of sorrowing friends.
