Daily Freeman Journal, Webster City, Iowa, Monday, March 15, 1954

Mrs. H.T. Layne, 73, died at 1:20 p.m. Saturday at the Hamilton county hospital where she had been a patient since Friday. She had been in failing health for several years.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Foster funeral home with the Rev. C.H. Pettersen officiating.

Burial will be in Graceland cemetery.

Nellie Mason Hocker, daughter of A.D. and Elizabeth Hocker, was born June 9, 1880 at Atlanta, Ill. She received her elementary schooling at Atlanta, and attended high school in Decatur. Ill. She taught school for several years in the state of Illinois and also for several terms in Hamilton county, Iowa.

She also taught for one year near Nashua, Valley county, Montana.

She was united in marriage April 25, 1912 to Harmon T. Layne at Tampico, Mont. Mr. and Mrs. Layne engaged in farming near Tampico until September, 1919, when they moved to Mrs. Layne's mother's farm near Stanhope, Iowa. The family farmed there several years, then moved to a farm nine and one-half miles south of Webster City.

In September, 1953, the Layne's retired from the farm and moved to their home at 1235 First street.

Mrs. Layne is survived by her husband and two daughters, Fay Maxine and Bonnie June; two nieces and one nephew, Mrs. Charles Schwartz of Jamestown, N.Y., Mrs. Frank Savecki of Baltimore, Md., and Howard Smith of Normal, Ill.

Mrs. Layne was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and three sisters.

Mrs. Layne joined the Methodist church in girlhood, and that denomination was her choice throughout her life. She had attended other churches, however, being a member of a Congregational church while living near Tampico, Mont. She was an attendant at the Homer Methodist church and was a member of the Home study group of the Methodist church at Webster City.

Mrs. Layne was a former correspondent for the Glasgow Courier at Glasgow, Mont. and also for the Webster City Daily Freeman-Journal.

Mrs. Layne was also very active in the Saratoga Sunshine Circle, a community group for which she enjoyed writing and doing special work.
