Funeral services for Harmon T. Layne, 78, longtime Hamilton county resident, will be held at 2 p.m Thursday at the Foster funeral home with the Rev. R.D. Kitterman officiating. Burial will be in Graceland cemetery.

Mr. Layne died at 8:50 p.m. Sunday at his home, 1235 First street. Death was attributed to a heart attack.

Harmon T. Layne, son of Samuel and Mary Ellen [Adams] Layne, was born Jan. 20, 1879, on the farm of his parents where the Red Cedar post office of pioneer days was located and is now known as the Saratoga community. His father died when he was a lad of 12, and being the only boy at home in a family which included five sisters, he greatly assisted his mother in maintaining a home for them. He obtained his schooling in the rural schools of the Saratoga community, later attending business college in Webster City.

Later he farmed in the Saratoga community, moving then to North Dakota where he homesteaded. He later moved to Montana.

He was united in marriage April 25, 1912 to Nellie Mason Hocker at Tampico, Montana. Mr. and Mrs. Layne engaged in farming near Tampico until September, 1919, when they moved to Mrs. Layne's mother's farm near Stanhope, Iowa. The family farmed there for several years, then moved to a farm nine and one-half miles south of Webster City. In September, 1953, Mr. and Mrs. Layne retired from the farm and moved to their present home at 1235 First street.

He was preceded in death by his wife, who died March 13, 1954; by four sisters and one brother. He is survived by two daughters, Faye Maxine Layne and Bonnie June Layne, both of Webster City; a sister, Mrs. Bess Kesler, also of Webster City; several nieces and nephews.
