Mrs. A. Lavine Dies Suddenly

Stanhope and its vicinity were inexpressibly shocked and grieved Monday morning to hear of the sudden death of Mrs. A.J. Lavine, which occurred at her home at about six-thirty o'clock that morning, of apoplexy.

Sunday morning, Mrs. Lavine suffered from a severe head ache. With her husband and Oscar Jenkins and wife she drove to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Henry Jacobson, in East Marion, Sunday forenoon, believing the ride would do her good. Towards evening her head ached worse and she remained at home while her husband went to church that evening. When he came home her headache seemed a trifle more severe, but she insisted that it was nothing requiring the attention of a physician. At about three-thirty she became seriously sick, Mr. Jenkins and wife were called and a doctor summoned, but three hours later death came.

Annie M. Berggren was born in Smaland, Sweden, November 2, 1860, and died April 3, 1911 at the age of 50 years, 5 months and 1 day. In 1864 the family came to America, lived at Moline, Ill., until 1867, then came to Iowa, locating in East Marion where she resided until she was married, and has since lived at Stanhope. In 1881 she married August J. Lavine, to whom were born three daughters, Mrs. Oscar Jenkins of Stanhope, Mrs. Henry Jacobson of East Marion and Mrs. Dannie Knight also residing near Stanhope. The husband and all three daughters survive to mourn her loss, and all, including the husbands of the three daughters, were at her bedside at the end.

Funeral services will be held this afternoon at one o'clock, from the Christian church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Sea, and the body will be laid at rest in the Stanhope [Lawn Hill] cemetery.

Mrs. Lavine was a member of the Christian church ever since the church was organized here. She was always very prominent in the work of all the ladies' aid societies of the town. Not only was she always a devoted wife and loving mother, but in a quiet, unobtrusive way, she was a loved and esteemed faithful worker in all the good causes in which the ladies of Stanhope were interested. Her place is a hard one to fill, and she will be missed and mourned, not alone by the members of the bereaved family, but also by the entire community.

The Record extends its sincere sympathy to the afflicted members of the family in their loss.
