Webster City Daily News, Webster City, Iowa, Monday, January 14, 1924

August Johnson Lavine was born in Kransberg, Lane, Sweden, September 11, 1857, where he lived with his parents until he was 21 years of age. He came to America with his sister, Mrs. Gust Berggren in the year 1878, and settled in Hamilton county.

On August 25, 1881, he was united in marriage at Webster City to Anna M. Berggren of south Hamilton county. They established their home at Lake Center, where Mr. Lavine was employed as a blacksmith with Olaf Rosengreen. Here they lived seven years, until they moved to Stratford. Two years later they went to Ridgeport. In 1892 they left Ridgeport and came to Stanhope, Iowa. Here Mr. Lavine began blacksmithing in the shop now owned by A.G. Newman. He established a record as a good blacksmith until he sold his shop and retired about the year 1912.

Mr. Lavine did not retire from active work, however, but became a familiar figure seen upon the streets daily, as he faithfully performed the tasks required of him as street commissioner, which office he held about six years. In the spring of 1921, he was stricken with a paraletic stroke and his health has not been the best since that time.

The deceased possessed those qualities as an industrious man, one who was ambitious, and one of frugal habits. He was a faithful husband and a good home maker. The union of their home ties were strengthened by the coming into it, three daughters, Agnes, Mrs. Oscar Jenkins; Alma, Mrs. Dan R. Knight; and Olive, Mrs. Henry Jacobson, who survive the father. The mother, Mrs. Anna Lavine, passed beyond in death, April 3, 1911.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Lavine were members of the Church of Christ for many years and were faithful attendants at the services when health permitted them to go.

The deceased was stricken to his bed about two weeks ago and gradually grew weaker, until he passed away Thursday evening, January 3, 1924, about 9:45, at the age of 66 years, 3 months and 13 days.

Besides the three daughters, who are left to mourn his death, there is one sister, Mrs. Gust Berggren, and three grandchildren, Wilmer and Frances Jacobson and Marvel Knight, all of whom reside at Stanhope. Also many near relatives and a host of friends.

The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from the house at 4:00 o'clock and at the Church of Christ at 1:30 [should this be 4:30], in charge of Rev. Harold Reeves. Interment was made at the Lawn Hill cemetery southeast of Stanhope. The six nephews of the deceased who performed the services of pall bearers were: Ed J. Johnson, Imbert S. Johnson, Wm. M. Johnson, Clarence L. Johnson and Elmer Berggren and Charlie Berggren.
