STANHOPE, Iowa, Oct. 19 - Peter Hove, 69, prominent Stanhope resident and former mayor, died at his home yesterday morning at 7:50 o'clock following a several weeks' illness.

Death was caused by cancer. He had been bedfast since last Monday.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 at the home and at 2 o'clock at the Stanhope Lutheran church with the Rev. Oppedahl, of Stanhope, and the Rev. G.O. Paulsrud, of Randall, officiating. Burial will be made in the Lawn Hill cemetery at Stanhope. Foster's of Webster City in charge.

Mr. Hove is survived by his wife, Mrs. Emily Hove, three daughters, Mrs. Gladys Christensen of Burlington; Miss Marie, of Wayne, Neb., and Mrs. Arline Sylvester of Albuquerque, N.M., and a son, Leslie of Webster City, deputy county clerk.

There are also three brothers and one sister: Eric, of Stanhope; Mrs. Carrie Oppedahl, of Jewell; Charles and John of Story City.

Peter Hove was born in Norway Feb. 6, 1867, his parents being Mr. and Mrs. Peter L. Hove.

He was brought to the United States when he was two years old by his parents, who came directly to Hamilton county and located in the Stanhope community.

Peter Hove grew to young manhood in that community and entered the implement business in Stanhope in 1892. He was married Sept. 1, 1897 to Miss Emily Hanson, of Stanhope.

The Hove family has always lived in Stanhope, and besides being in the implement business, Mr. Hove also owned a garage there in later years and had personal supervision of his two stock farms. He retired from active business in 1927 but was keenly interested in his farming interests until his health failed.

He was also very active in politics in the county, being a life long republican. He was mayor of Stanhope for many years and had also served as justice of the peace and as a member of the school board.

He favored a state income tax to equalize taxes, desired a survey of the schools, favored a strict regulation of public utilities and stood for the independent merchant.

He was a member of the Lutheran church and was faithful to his belief as long as he lived.

Besides being prominent and having for years taken a large part in politics, he also had been active all his adult life in all civic movements in Stanhope. He was, in fact, Stanhope's foremost citizen -- a leader in all local affairs of a public nature and a man whose judgment was widely sought by the people of his home town and community.

Outside civic and community affairs, he also had been active the most of his life in the affairs of his church. He had held many church offices and been of much assistance in the promotion of church work not only in the Stanhope community, but elsewhere. He had also been active in colleges and schools supported by the Lutheran denomination.
