OLD STANHOPE RESIDENT DIES

Charley Davis, Aged Past 70, Dies; Had Lived on One Farm for 37 Years

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the M.E. church for Charley Davis, who died late Monday afternoon, May 13. Rev. G.H. Dick, assisted by Rev. C.F. Schmidt, was in charge of the services at the church and Rev. Lane was in charge of the service at the home. Music was furnished by a mixed quartet consisting of Mrs. E.J. Johnson, Mrs. William Johnson, Elmer Malmberg and L.Q. Dick.

The pall bearers were: Frank Bockwoldt, John Whalen, W.R. East, S.G. Kent, P. Peterson and Andrew Hill. Burial was made in the Stanhope [Lawn Hill] cemetery.

Charles Davis was born in Jamesville, Wis., Oct. 25, 1858, and died at the age of 70 years, 6 months and 18 days. When 19 years of age he came to Iowa and later spent two years in South Dakota. Then he returned to Iowa and on March 13, 1887 was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth McFarland. To this union were born 11 children, all of whom are living and who were at his bedside. Mr. and Mrs. Davis had lived 37 of their 42 years of married life on the farm, where Mr. Davis died. He leaves his wife and children, Mrs. C.H. Toppenberg, of Jewell, Roy, Earl, Frank, Furman, Charles, Clare and Irene, of Stanhope, Mrs. C.D. Manley, of Des Moines, Mrs. Archie Amundson, of Radcliffe, and Mrs. L.G. Dick of Okland. There are three sisters, Mrs. Clara Pierce, of California, Mrs. Mollie Nickerson, of Wyoming, and Mrs. Alice McFarland, of Sioux City, three brothers, Frank, of Springfield, and Joe and Harry, of Stanhope, and many other relatives and a host of friends.
