Mrs. Hazel Riley Young, 87, longtime Stanhope-Stratford area resident, died Monday evening at the Boone County hospital following a sudden illness. She had been in failing health the past two years.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Christian church in Stanhope with Rev. William Van Dam officiating and with burial in Lawn Hill cemetery at Stanhope.

Friends may call at the Foster Funeral home after 4 p.m. today until 9:30 a.m. Thursday when the casket will be taken to the church.

Hazel Etta Riley, daughter of Herbert and Mary Jane Wells Riley, was born Oct. 20, 1897 at Stanhope and educated there.

On Aug. 23, 1922, she was married to Edward Young, and the couple made their home on a farm near Stratford until 1933 when they moved to a farm near Stanhope.

She was preceded in death by her husband in August, 1974, and for the past eight years had resided in Stratford the last two of those years at the Stratford Care Center.

She is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law, Robert and Ula Mae Young of Stanhope and Roger Young; three grandsons and their wives, David and Barbara Young, Stanhope, Rick and Janet Young of Stanhope, Bruce and Dwyla Young of Raymor, Mo.; nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and three sisters.

She was a member of the Christian church at Stanhope and for many years was a Sunday school teacher. She was very active in the CWF of the church.

She was a county Farm Bureau Women's chairman for several years, and assisted with the Gray Ladies program at the Hamilton County Hospital for many years.
