Nioma Whalen, 80, Stanhope, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Christian Church - Stanhope Parish, with Pastor Suzie Moore officiating. Burial will be in the Lawn Hill Cemetery, south of Stanhope. Visitation will be at the Foster Funeral Home from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Friday and at the church prior to the service on Saturday.

Nioma Geraldine Enderson, daughter of Andrew and Inga (Fardal) Enderson, was born March 10, 1921 on a farm south of Stanhope. She attended Clear Lake Township rural school and graduated from Stanhope High School in 1938 and attended a business college at Chillicothe, Mo. She worked for The Daily Freeman-Journal. On June 25, 1941, she married Edgar Ralph Whalen at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, southwest of Jewell. The couple farmed south of Stanhope. For many years, she was secretary for the Stanhope Public School system and later for the South Hamilton Community School District, retiring in 1983. She continued to reside on the family farm.

Mrs. Whalen is survived by: her husband, Ralph, at Crestview Manor; two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Bonnie Whalen of Stanhope, Jerry and Kris Whalen of Altoona; grandchildren, Todd, Trent, Stephen and Jennifer Whalen and Steven and Brian Samuelson; one brother, Orlin Enderson of Ankeny; and eight nieces and a nephew.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; one sister, Ione Sonerholm; and a brother, Harold Enderson.

She was a member of the Christian Church - Stanhope Parish, church circle, 3 W coffee club, Monday Morning Coffee Club, Stanhope Senior Citizen Club, and for many years the couple enjoyed square dancing.
