Edgar Ralph Whalen, 81, of Webster City, a retired Stanhope area farmer, died Sunday, April 14, 2002 at Hamilton Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Stanhope Parish, with Pastor Suzie Moore officiating. Burial will be in the Lawn Hill Cemetery, southeast of Stanhope. Visitation will be at the Foster Funeral Home from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Tuesday and at the church prior to the service.

Edgar Ralph Whalen, son of Edgar and Irene Davis Whalen, was born April 12, 1921 on a farm southeast of Stanhope. He attended Stanhope Consolidated School, graduating in 1938. He started farming with his father. On June 25, 1941, he married Nioma Geraldine Enderson at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, southwest of Jewell. The couple farmed south of Stanhope. He retired in 1991. He had resided at the Stratford Care Center for one year and at Crestview Manor for the past five years. Mrs. Whalen died May 9, 2001.

Mr. Whalen is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Bonnie Whalen of Stanhope; Jerry and Kris Whalen of Altoona; grandchildren, Todd, Trent, Stephen and Jennifer Whalen; Steve and Brian Samuelson; eleven great-grandchildren; sister, Roberta Teig of Webster City.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.

His memberships include Stanhope Parish, former church board officer, church board trustee and Deacon, Farm Bureau, Stanhope Lions and had worked for the Hamilton County Assessor.
