Gene Northrop, 66, Stanhope, died Sunday, July 23, 2000 at his home. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Stanhope with Amy Odgren officiating. Burial will be in the Lawn Hill Cemetery south of Stanhope. Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Foster Funeral Home, Webster City, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Eugene Edward Northrop, son of Edward and Dorothy Perry Northrop, was born Oct. 1, 1933 at Fort Dodge. He attended schools at Vernon Consolidated schools at Renwick. On Sept. 4, 1953, he married Arlene Rose Marie Gangstead at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple lived in Hardy and he started his career as a company truck driver for Concrete Products in Humboldt in 1955. The couple moved to Stanhope in 1957. By 1959, he bought his first trucking and leased it to Davis Truck Line of Stanhope. In 1962, he formed his own trucking company and for 25 years, he operated a livestock transportation service. In 1986, he leased his truck to Umthum truck lines of Eagle Grove. Less than one year later, he signed with Smithway Motor Express Inc of Fort Dodge, where he remained employed until his death. He was honored before 1500 trucking officials in June of 1993 when he was named 1992's independent contractor of the year at the Interstate Truckload Carrier's Conference (ITCC) in Las Vegas. At the time, Northrop had driven a truck for 37 years of his professional life, traveling 3.1 million accident-free miles.

Survivors are his wife, Arlene, two daughters and sons-in-law, Janice [should be Jeanie] and Jim McCollough, Stanhope, Judy and Curt Harrenstein, Webster City; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Gary of Stanhope, Tom and Linda Northrop, Stanhope, one brother, Jim Northrop, Humboldt, one sister, Ethel Doyle, Humboldt, nine grandchildren, Justin Adams, Fallon Majors, Matt, Melanie, Adam, Amanda and Abby Northrop, Joe and Marcus Harrenstein.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Mr. Northrop was a member of the Moose Lodge #735, Webster City. Memorials may be given to the Hamilton County Hospice.
