Dr. Allen Leman, 48, Webster City, died Wednesday, Aug. 26, at Vaux, France. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Asbury United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ian Hoover officiating and burial at Graceland Cemetery. Visitation is after 5 p.m. Friday until 9:30 a.m. Saturday, when the casket will be taken to the church.

Dr. Allen Duane Leman, the son of Vernon and Viola (Beer) Leman, was born Jan. 15, 1944 at Peoria, Ill.

He earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Illinois in 1968 and his PhD from the same university in 1975.

On Sept. 4, 1966, he married Loretta Kupferschmid at Eureka, Ill.

Beginning in 1969, Dr. Leman served as an instructor in the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Illinois, serving there until 1975.

From 1975 through 1987 he served as a professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Minnesota.

In 1987, he came to Webster City where he was president of Pig Weighs and Means and veterinarian for Swine Graphics and Pig Rationales. In 1992, the businesses merged to become Swine Graphics Enterprises and Dr. Leman served as managing partner.

He also was a pork producer, as the owner and manager of Dayton Pork Ltd.

Dr. Leman's list of accomplishments include serving as an author and partner for the International Pigletter, as well as the organizer and speaker of the Pigletter Seminar in the United States. He was editor of the "Diseases of Swine" textbook and author of 52 scientific manuscripts.

Dr. Leman headed the University of Minnesota Swine Center as director. He also served as an adjunct professor and had been major advisor for 21 graduate students. He was a past president of the American Association of Swine Practitioners and served as consultant to large farms throughout the United States.

Since 1988, Dr. Leman had been a member of the Webster City Airport Commission.

Survivors include: his wife, Loretta; two sons, Rod and Guy; one daughter, Valerie, all of Webster City; his parents, Vernon and Viola Leman, Eureka, Ill.; and three brothers, Gene Leman, Sioux City, Howard Leman, Champaign, Ill., and Keith Leman, Eureka, Ill.

Dr. Leman was a member of Missionary Alliance Church of Blairsburg. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given at the discretion of the family.
