Melvin A. Hove, 80, Hiawatha, died Wednesday, Aug. 19 at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Our Savior's Lutheran church in Stanhope with the Rev. Lee Laavig officiating. Burial will be in Lawn Hill Cemetery, southeast of Stanhope. Graveside military services will be conducted by the American Legion Post No. 191. Visitation is after 9 a.m. Saturday until time of service at the church. Foster Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Melvin A. Hove, son of Eddie and Hulda (Erickson) Hove, was born Aug. 21, 1911 at Stanhope. He graduated from school there in 1929. He attended Webster City Junior College.

On June 14, 1931, he married Loreen Adams at Stanhope.

He was employed by the Iowa Highway Patrol as a district clerk from 1937-40 at Cedar Falls. He then transferred to Mason City with the patrol, working there until 1942. He served with the U.S. Navy from 1942-46. Following his discharge, he returned to the patrol in Ames. He also served as sergeant and lieutenant and was a commander at District 10 in Oelwein from 1966-69. He later became a safety consultant for the Iowa Department of Public Safety, then a U.S. Marshall for the Northern District of Iowa. He also served as an instructor for law enforcement courses. He retired in 1977.

He is survived by his wife, Loreen; daughters, Sandra Vosseller of Marion and Jo Dike of Ramha, N.M.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and sister, Myrtle Green of Des Moines. He was preceded in death by son, Richard; his parents, one brother and two sisters.

He was a member of the Lutheran Church, Masonic Lodge, Shrine, Order of Eastern Star, American Legion and the Hi-12.
