Shirley Dick, 71, Keokuk, died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001 at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City. Services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church in Keokuk with Rev. Paul Pennington officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk from 7-9 p.m. Burial will be in the Stanhope Cemetery [Lawn Hill] at Stanhope.

Shirley Dick was born April 9, 1930, near Oakland, Iowa, the daughter of Dr. Leo G. and Ethel A. Davis Dick. She received a BA degree in English from the University of Iowa. In 1955, she received a MA degree in Library Science from the University of Minnesota. From 1955-1957, she was the bookmobile librarian for the Literary Association of Portland, Ore. From 1957-1964, she was bookmobile librarian and children's librarian in the Butte County Library in Oroville, Calif. She served as librarian for the Sheridan County Library in Hoxie, Kansas, and the Pioneer Memorial Library in Colby, Kansas from 1965 to 1967. During this time, she also served as supervisor for the six-county bookmobile service and was the advisor for the setting up of the Northwest Kansas Regional Library system. She moved to Keokuk and was the administrator of the Keosippi Area Library and Processing Center from April 1967 to August 1975 when it closed. She became the children's librarian at the Keokuk Public Library in September, 1975, and became the director of the library in 1976 until her retirement in 1999.

Miss Dick had been a member of the Iowa Library Association, the American Library Association, the American Association of University Women, and PEO Chapter U. As a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, she sang in the choir, was a member of the Joyful Circle of United Methodist Women, and served as group leader, Super Seniors and served on the Administration Council. She was also a member of the Lee County Historical Society, Kalawequois Chapter # 478 of Questers, the Keokuk Art Center, the United Way, the George M. Versity Museum Commission and was a part member of the Keokuk Business and Professional Women.

Survivors are three cousins, William Dick of Goreville, Ill., Robert Dick of Belleville, Ill., and Barbara Mathers of Robbinsdale, Minn., and one aunt, Irene Whalen and husband Ralph of Stanhope.
