Earl S. Davis, son of Charles and Elizabeth Davis, was born Nov. 17, 1890, at Stanhope, Iowa. He received his education in the rural schools of that community and in 1914, was united in marriage to Alice Peterson. Three children were born to this union: Mrs. Herschel Williams (Kathryn) and two sons, Kenneth and Marvin. His wife passed away in 1923.

On June 17, 1933, he was united in marriage to Lillian Nelson Ross and with their daughter, Pauline, moved to a farm in the Jewell community. They resided there until 1955 when ill health forced his retirement from farming, and they moved to their present home in Story City.

Mr. Davis died at the Story City Memorial hospital Oct. 27, 1971, where he had been a patient for five weeks. He was a member of the St. Petri Lutheran church in Story City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother. Survivors include his wife, Lillian; two sons, Kenneth of Stratford; Marvin of Boone, and two daughters, Mrs. Herschel Williams of Yucaysa, Calif., and Mrs. Robert L. Ness of Story City; 11 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Also surviving are three sisters, Mrs. C.F. Toppenburg of Jewell, Mrs. Leo Dick of Oakland, Iowa, and Mrs. Edgar Whalen of Stanhope; four brothers, Roy and Furman of Stanhope and Charles and Clare of Webster City.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 30, 1971, from St. Petri Lutheran church in Story City with the Rev. Rhuben Ago in charge. Mrs. Joel Jacobson served as organist and also accompanied Mrs. Loren Twedt as she sang "How Great Thou Art" and "Rock of Ages." Burial was at the Lawn Hill Cemetery in Stanhope.

Pallbearers were three grandsons, Robert Davis, Brian Davis and Michael Ness, and three nephews, Frank Davis, Gaylord Nelson and Ralph Whalen.
